Left-handed Golf Player

By Linden J. Walhard

If you are left-handed, you may find it difficult to find the right equipment when learning how to play golf. Depending on where you live and if you have access to large golf stores or pro shops, you may have to order your equipment through a website or catalogue. While some left-handed people learn how to play right-handed, it is not uncommon to find a left-handed player or two at the golf course or driving range.

Before you begin taking golf lessons, you should decide if you want to be a right-handed or left-handed golf player. Either one is fine, but you should choose the side you feel most comfortable with so you can learn and develop your own golfing style. Those who are uncomfortable will never learn how to play the game properly. Once you have determined that you want to learn how to golf using your left-hand, you should track down a set of golf clubs that are appropriate. Ask at pro shops who they would recommend.

Since custom golf clubs can be expensive, you may be able to find used left-handed clubs on classified ads or in used sporting goods stores. You will also need to left-handed putter. Once you locate these items, you are ready to being taking lessons. While you can learn from a right-handed golfer, you may want to find someone who can teach both types of golfers or a left-handed golf instructor. They will be able to teach you more about your swing and offer advice on any problems you may encounter.

Learning to golf left-handed is no different than learning if you were right-handed. You will still need to practice at least once or twice during the week in order to improve, you will still have to learn how to golf in adverse weather conditions, and you will still have to learn how to hit the ball and how to putt. Even though you may have difficulty at first finding a set of left-handed clubs, it is the work you put into your practice sessions that will make the difference when you decide to play on a course or in a tournament.

Finding golf accessories may be easier than finding golf clubs. There are many stores that sell smaller items made for left-handed people. If you need gloves and other accessories, you should try to find them online or in specialty stores. Having the proper accessories will improve your game and make you feel more confident as a golfer.

Joe Posnanski: Life of Boswell (Sports Illustrated)

Tom Boswell is one of my sportswriting heroes. Boz has written eloquently about baseball and sports for some 40 years now. I have also talked with him at various events, and he's an extremely nice man who, it seems to me, usually has an interesting view of the world and of sports. His back-to-back columns on the Sugar Ray Leonard-Roberto Duran fights -- the first where Duran mauled Leonard, the ...
